What does a deputy nursery manager do?

A deputy nursery manager works closely with the nursery manager, supporting them with day-to-day operations of the nursery. You will help to ensure that the nursery is being run effectively and to the highest possible standard.

Responsibilities of a deputy nursery manager can include, but are not limited to:

  • Helping to recruit, train and manage staff
  • Assisting the manager with planning and organisation
  • Making sure EYFS requirements are met
  • Ensuring the nursery is compliant with Ofsted guidelines
  • Communicating with parents/carers
  • Ensuring that children’s needs are being met
  • Liaising between staff and the manager
  • Covering for the manager if they are absent

What skills do you need to be a deputy nursery manager?

To be a deputy nursery manager, you need to have skills including:

  • Communication skills
  • Team leadership skills
  • People management skills
  • Enthusiasm and positivity
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure
  • Problem-solving skills

You’re also expected to have a solid understanding of the EYFS curriculum and Ofsted standards.

What qualifications do you need to be a deputy nursery manager?

A deputy nursery manager is typically expected to have at least a Level 3 childcare qualification or equivalent. Deputy managers need to have strong knowledge of the EYFS and Ofsted, which comes with experience in the early years sector.

Many deputy managers progress to their role from a nursery room leader position or similar.
